The Academy — A Proposal Outline

A lock-step Honors program of predetermined course work as part of a rigorous yet low-cost liberal arts education designed specifically for admittance and transfer to first-tier universities.

Program terminates in an Associate of Liberal Arts Degree with Honors, consisting of 75 credit-hours (69 + 6 pre-admission hours) emphasizing communication and mathematics (specifically Latin and the Calculus), the Humanities, physical education, and multimedia presentation skills.

Candidates must qualify to begin program, having already satisfactorily completed trigonometry and first-semester composition (6 credit hours).  Deficiencies may be eradicated through classwork and intensive tutoring in summer prior to admission.

Second-year students tutor first-year students as part of service learning component.

A journal must be kept throughout the program; all courses are writing-intensive.

Capstone is summer abroad for credit, touring Greece, Rome, England, and either Paris or Vienna (depending on whether Art Appreciation or Music Appreciation was taken the previous summer).  Presentation of a comprehensive, digital Portfolio covering the entire program is required at the end of the capstone course.

Tuition covers cost of entire program, including summer programs, student tutoring, and travel, rather than being based on individual course work.  Program is priced between community college and university levels.  Price guarantees that courses will make regardless of enrollments.

Tuition also includes a laptop computer enhanced with hardware/software to support multimedia Portfolio development and presentation.

Every student is provided with mandatory work opportunities, including paid tutoring and paid internships working on the College’s student newspaper and/or humanities journal.  Employment outside of the College is contractually prohibited.
